5 Things that Decrease your Productivity and How to Fix them!

Hi everyone and Happy Friday! With school starting and work going into full gear, I thought I would dedicate a post to all of the things that we do that only decrease our productivity. I am a self-described Maximizer (maximizer of time, energy, and resources) so anything that decreases my productivity needs to be lost to the world (or at least mine).

It took my a few years to perfect my productivity abilities, but after some time I finally realized all of the things that were keeping me down, so I wanted to share them with you all!

1. Staying Logged In to Facebook - This is the worst thing for you when you are trying to get things accomplished. The amount of time that I wasted on Facebook in my first year at college (it also didn't help that I was homesick) could probably span 8 weeks. By staying automatically logged in to any social media, all I had to do was go to the page and I was sucked into it for easily thirty minutes. This not only sets you back those thirty minutes, but also the amount of time that it takes for you to find again what you were working on and reorganize your thoughts. To combat this, my first tip is to click the 'log out' button on your social media settings. Then the next time you log in, make sure that you don't have "Automatically Log In" checked or just log out each time you go on. This will make it less automatic of a thing to go onto your accounts and you also have to consciously choose to log in. It's like another barrier of protection from decreased productivity.

2. Keeping your Phone on Your Lap - It's almost the same thing as staying logged into your social media accounts. If you keep your cell phone right next to you at all time, you will be twice as likely to grab it right when it dings with a notification. Whether a text message, instagram like, or retweet, it will only keep you from getting what you need to do done. Especially when it dings every few minutes. My suggestion is to keep it in your backpack, at the end of your bed, or in another room while you are working on things. You could also turn text messages and notifications to silent, while keeping your phone calls loud so that if someone is really trying to reach you, you'll be able to answer it!

3. Working with friends - Your study habits are different from your roommate's, your best friend's, and your sister's, so studying with them might actually distract you more than it will help you. With everyone else's phones going off, and notifications dinging every few seconds, the likelihood of distractions intensifies. While studying with people in your class can help you with the material, you definitely all need to be committed to getting work done in order for it to work. To fix your friends decreasing your productivity, it may be necessary to curtail studying with friends and just spending your free time with them. I know when I worked in the library alongside friends, I had to be working on a project that was okay to be distracted by: PowerPoints, outlines, highlighting ... etc. anything that wasn't too brain-intensive but something that still needed to be done. Set guidelines for yourself so that you know when it is appropriate for friend distractions and when you really need to hunker down and work by yourself.

4. Your Study Habits - It takes a while to get into a rhythm for your studying and homework patterns, but you need to make sure the ones that you are continuing are the ones that help you out the most. You may find that working in your dorm room is distracting or working in the library makes you break your concentration. Every person is different, so if you consistently find yourself looking up from your laptop or your eye wandering around the room while you are reading, you may need to think of a better habit. My tip is to try new methods and get feedback from people in your life. Learn how they study and what works best for them. It may not work for you, but it could spark a new idea to help your stay on task and focused to finish!

5. Food and Drink - To this day, nothing is more distracting to me than drinking a Frappucinno and eating popcorn. I'm so focused on enjoying those items that it distracts me from what I should really be working on. You may think you're saving time by combining eating with school work, but it honestly just distracts you more (especially when you drop some chili on your laptop). To combat this, use your eating time to focus solely on that or to browse your social media accounts. This could definitely kill two birds with one stone, but make sure you're combining something that is mindless with your eating so not to decrease your productivity even more.

As we enter the new school year, it is really important that you start making your productivity a priority. Doing that at the start of the semester before papers and tests start happening, is only going to keep you organized and focused as the school year progresses. Are there any tips that you have for increasing productivity or something you cut out of your schedule that used to decrease your productivity. Share below so we can all learn! Have a great weekend!

Finishing the School Year Strong

Happy Sunday everyone! I hope you all had a great weekend and are spending today prepping for the great week ahead! This is my last week of classes for my grad school career, so I am trying my absolute hardest to finish out with some motivation and to end it on a strong note!

As some of you may be finishing up your school year in the coming weeks, I thought I'd share what I'm trying to do to finish out the semester strong and in charge!!

1. Give your last papers and exams one more look through. Make sure you're taking the time to do one last proofread and edit for any final papers, projects, or essays! It will only take 5-10 minutes of your time and it could be the difference between getting a B+ and an A-. Who wouldn't want to go up a letter grade for a few extra minutes?

2. Meet with any administrators, teachers, or professors that made a profound impact on you this year. If you haven't talked with them in a little while, catch them up on everything going on in your life and your exciting summer plans! Who knows, they may have an idea on a summer job or internship. Also, make sure you thank them for everything they did for you this year.

3. Plan a get-together for all of your friends. Do a short weekend trip or a fun night out with your friends. Whether you're going mini-golfing or out dinner, spend time with each other before the summer comes and you won't see each other for a few months. You'll cherish these memories until the next get-together!

4. Don't skip school or your classes just because it is almost over. Like I said, finish it out strong, so don't miss any classes unless you absolutely have to. Some high schools have requirements for attendance if you are graduating this year and some professors will drop you a letter grade if you miss the last few classes (That would be going from an A- to a B-, simply for not showing to class!). You might also miss some exam review or valuable hints on questions!

5. Meet with the clubs you're in charge with to make a plan for next Fall. In high school and college, as soon as you are elected to a leadership position, you want to make sure you plan out for next fall. Start thinking of events you want to work on and if you all should meet at some point during the summer. This will help create the vision for next year and help you and your peers get started on planning the events!

6. Just hang in there! Your school year is almost done, so if you hate all of your classes or are just ready for something new, you're almost there! While you don't want to wish the remainder of your school year away, if it helps you to finish out strong and staying motivated, then do it!

I hope you all have a great week and start your plans for finishing out the school year strong!

Monday Motivation - Finals Week

Hello everyone!! Happy Finals Week to all of the college students out there and Happy *almost* Winter Break to all of you high school students! While looking forward to time at home in your pjs, watching Netflix is its own form of inspiration, I also wanted to provide you with some extra motivation to finish out the next couple of weeks strong before you get a few weeks off from school!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
** Once you're done with Finals make sure you take some time with your friends to de-stress before you go home for the holidays. Meet for coffee or lunch and spend time together not talking about studying, exams, or any reading you have to do! These are the moments you'll cherish and you can even make it a tradition for each semester after Finals. If you're in High School, go to a Sports game with your group of friends! Cheer on your home time in a tournament or travel to see them play against a local school!
This is just funny ... and we can all relate!
** Stock up on these items as you begin your final preparations for your classes this semester!
Highlighters, pens, and pencils
note cards and post-it notes
blank paper (to draw graphs/flow charts)
markers and crayons (for last minute projects)
any notes on lectures or readings
chocolate and iced cold water to keep you awake
a visual of why you're working so hard
** If you need a break from studying or you need some background noise while you're putting a portfolio together, then throw in your favorite movie, whether it be a holiday movie or just an everyday movie that you love! My suggestion is Legally Blonde or pick out some comedy videos from Youtube! (Dane Cook was my favorite my Freshmen year of college.)
** Buzzfeed (the Holy Grail Procrastination Station) has published a list of "31 Clever Tips To Make Life Feel A Little Easier," and you can find it here. If you're feeling overwhelmed or just feel like you need a break to collect your thoughts, that is okay! You're supposed to work up to Finals Week, so make sure you plan in some down time to relax yourself.
I hope you all have a really great week filled with awesome accomplishments and thoughtful answers on your Final Exams. If you don't have Finals or Midterms for another couple weeks, then use this time to ask your professors and teachers about any concepts you don't understand or even tell you what may or may not be on the exam so that you can start preparing note cards! Don't wait until the last minute to start your studying ... its a marathon not a sprint! HAVE A GREAT WEEK EVERYONE!!!
Monday Motivation!
Hi all! I hope you had an enjoyable and productive weekend ... working on your college and scholarship applications to have them completed and sent out before Thanksgiving Break!
I know for myself, I have lost all ambition for this semester and am struggling to stay motivated and maybe you're feeling the same way! (Grad students have motivation issues too!) I have compiled a little Get Motivated post today to help you focus on this week and get everything completed that you need to!!
SPRING BREAK!!
While Spring Break may be five to six months away, it doesn't hurt to start thinking of ideas and ways to spend your spring break! Here is a list of the 10 Best Cheap Spring Break Destinations. Personally, I am in favor of beach destinations, but you may find a mountain or city adventure is more your family's speed. Use this time now to work hard and save up money for your potential spring break vacation!
Personally, I am a fan of Myrtle Beach ... but then again
so aren't most people from the Northeast after a long Winter!
CELEBRATE VETERAN'S DAY!!
This Wednesday (November 11th) is Veteran's Day here in the USA, when we celebrate and thank the men and women who have fought for our country. So, use their bravery and their love of protecting this land as motivation to help increase your bravery of studying for an exam or working on a project. But first, thank a veteran or a veteran's family member for their sacrifices ... it would mean the world to them! Also, if you attend a Veteran's Day Parade or walk past someone from the American Legion with poppy's, give them a donation, even if it is just a dollar, the American Legion gives so much to veteran's, their families, and to active service-people and their families.
Happy Veteran's Day to my grandfather, Retired MSG Lindsay and my wonderful
grandmother for standing by his side even while they were continents apart!
It's Monday ... that means you are four days away from the weekend. That is four days to get everything accomplished on your to-do list that you can! Use the time you have this week to talk to your teachers and professors, make a new memory with your sibling, and ask for advice from your mom or dad. You can make it through this week and can make it through this semester! Work hard and reap the benefits!!
