What to Do at a College Fair!

Hi everyone! Now that school is in full swing, so are all of the awesome opportunities to attend a college fair in your area! A college fair is a great chance to meet with representatives from a bunch of different schools without having to travel super far.

At a college fair, each college has a table with a display set up which provides information on the college's location, their majors, extra-curricular and athletics offerings, and unique opportunities available on their campuses. They also will have some pamphlets and brochures for you to take with you! Here are some tips/suggestions for you to have a great college fair experience!
  1. Bring a Bag! You are going to be collecting a lot of materials from athletics brochures, study abroad worksheets, to business cards. It is best if you have something to put all of that information in. Some college fairs provide plastic bags for you, but others don't so you will want to be prepared! My suggestion is either a back pack or a tote bag, that way you can drop stuff in your pockets as you are walking around.
  2. Wear Comfortable Shoes! You are going to be standing and walking around a lot, so be sure you are wearing comfortable shoes.  Some High School Guidance Counselors suggest you dress up to attend a college fair and if you are going with your school, you should probably follow their suggestions. However, if you are going by yourself, with some friends, or with your family, you can dress nice but still be comfortable! This isn't an interview, it is just a chance to get more information about the colleges! Jeans are fine to wear with your comfortable shoes, but please no sweatpants or yoga pants!!
  3. Make Stickers with your Information! So, I never knew about this as a High School student, but it saves you a lot of time and effort of continuously writing your name and information on hundreds of recruiting cards. (It probably won't be 100, but trust me, after the tenth it will feel like it!) So, these stickers/labels can be found at office supply stores or even at Walmart. You will want to include the following information:
    Full Name and Gender
    Mailing Address
    Telephone and Cell Phone
    Name of your High School
    Intended Major
Extra-Curricular Activities or Athletics you are interested in

You can type the information out and print it on the labels for you to have the day of the college fair. Peeling off a sticker and putting it on the recruiter card will help save a lot of time. If you don't have the access to these or you are short on time, write up an index card with all of that information so that you don't take as much time filling out the recruiting cards. (This will be better than looking at your phone at each booth trying to find your cell phone or home phone number.) This will also give you more time to speak with the representative and actively listen to what they have to say!
  4. Have a Game Plan! Most college fair organizers put out a list closer to the date of the event of the colleges that are registered to attend. Once you get this list, make a game plan for which universities you really want to visit and what specific questions you want to know. **If you are just starting your college search and this is your first event, then having a game plan isn't necessarily essential. As long as you go into the event with an open mind and a willingness to stop at different tables and chat with the admissions representatives, then it will be successful for you!
  5. Be Independent! Whether you go to the college fair with your parents or go with your friends, don't cling to them. This is your opportunity to go out there, meet with representatives, and start formulating your future! If you are only going to the tables that your parents and friends want, you may miss out on your dream school's table. I definitely suggest you take your parent's advice on what college tables to visit, but visit some of the ones that you want too!
NACAC (National Association for College Admissions Counseling) holds National College Fairs all across the country during the fall. If you go to this website, you will be able to find a college fair near you! Don't forget to ask your guidance counselor if they know of any local college fairs that you can attend close to home.

Virtual College Fair - Review

Happy Monday everyone! I wanted to share with you all my opinions/experiences on the Virtual College Fair that was held by College Week Live. There were three different components: School Profiles, Presentations, and Group/One-on-One Chats with College Representatives.

School Profiles
Each college that participated in the event has a profile with information such as major/programming offerings, scholarship information, methods of contact to admissions representatives, and videos of each institution's campus.

Profile for Champlain College

My suggestion for using the profiles on College Week Live is to watch the videos that are uploaded, as well as, look at the 'Fast Facts' about the university to gauge whether you want to pursue this institution further.  The profiles also offer links to different aspects of their websites.

Presentations
Throughout the Virtual College Fair, different experts presented on topics related to the college search. I watched the presentation entitled, "Safety, Reach, and Realistic Schools," by Jessica Tomer, Editor-In-Chief of Carnegie Communications. It was a really interesting presentation with a different frame of viewing the colleges that you apply to.

Presentations like this one by Jessica Tomer, are uploaded frequently on many different topics on the College Week Live website.

Group/One-on-One Chat
This is a really unique feature of the Virtual College Fair because many different universities were available to chat with, like you were at an in-person College Fair. I entered three group chats just to see how the conversations were going; one with Syracuse University, one with UCLA, and one with SUNY FIT. The larger universities at the Fair had more than one representative, which I think worked well because they were able to answer more questions. Also, not only did they personally answer the questions (not like a robot!), they also offered specific links on their websites that those students may be interested in following.

Syracuse University Group Chat

SUNY FIT Group Chat
I also did a one-on-one chat with a representative with SUNY FIT. If you have specific questions that you want addressed and you don't want to discuss them in the group chat, the one-on-one chat is a good option. However, if the group chat is busy, there is a chance that those representatives are also busy with other chats, so be patient while waiting for the answer.

Overall Review: In general, I think that the Virtual College Fair is a good option if you are unable to travel to a larger in-person college fair because the variety of colleges and universities that were at the Virtual College Fair would be far more that those at a normal college fair. This is also a great way to not become too overwhelmed by all of the tables and information booths at a normal college fair session.  I hope that if you attended the Virtual College Fair that you were able to find some colleges that you hope to pursue further! Any comments about your experiences are definitely welcome!!

Virtual College Fair

Hi everyone! So, one day while browsing current event articles in the world of higher education, I stumbled on the College Week Live website. I had never heard about it before, but it has some great tools for students and parents who are just starting or continuing their college search process.

Many different universities are part of College Week Live, including: Abilene Christian University, Binghamton University (SUNY), Cornell University, Layola Marymount University, and many others. Because it is virtual, this is a great way to connect with these universities without having to travel directly to their campuses, especially for those universities that are across the country. You can chat with admissions representatives at scheduled times, view the colleges' profiles, and watch videos on different topics. This information helps you get a good feel of the college or university before you pursue it in greater detail.

One interesting event that College Week Live is hosting is a Virtual College Fair on Friday, August 13, 2015 from 2:00pm to 10:00pm. You just need to create an account with them and then tune in that day to attend the event from the comfort of your own home! There are some great schools already listed as participants and more to come. (Each time I log onto the webpage, a few new colleges have been added to the list.) Also, with attending the event, you are eligible to win a $2,500 scholarship, which is pretty great!

I plan on attending the event also and will give my opinion, viewpoints, and tips for this and future virtual college fairs! I definitely suggest you check it out if you have a free hour that Friday! Have a great weekend everyone!
